DID YOU KNOW...

Adinkra
symbols have their
origins in Ghana, West Africa
and there are literally
hundreds of them
with variations.  They are
designs that represent
cultural values relative
to spirituality, family,
relationships, government,
how an individual should
behave in society.
My favorite one
looks like this

and is called the
G'Nyame (pronounced
gee-nyah-may).  It means "in
the beginning there was no
One but God" or "fear none
but God".  You'll see it
frequently used in
my work.

Mehendi  is a popular form
of henna body art
and is most often associated
with festivals, celebrations
and rituals
in India and other
regions of Southeast Asia
and North Africa.
The symbols used are often
stylized representations of
forms found in nature.  I
love the rhythmic, flowing
lines of mehendi designs
and often juxtapose favorite
African
adinkra symbols with
my
mehendi renderings.

Bibi- Wife of Noble Character

This a large, lush wall hanging which characterizes an intercultural exchange.  It measures    " x   "  The name of this piece also  makes reference to the Proverbs 31 Woman of
the Blble.
Bibi is the Hindi word for wife, and in South Asian culture weddings and bridal attire in particular are a sumptuous feast of color, texture and embellishments.
Authentic artifacts and textiles included in this piece include round shisha embroidery samples (often used in dowries) and  antique sari border( hand-sewn with woven gold
ribbon and sequins-the type used on an actual bridal sari) . Hand-stitched gold-toned metal
purl surround the image of the young woman, in addition to gold-toned miniature
"coins".  The drawing is reproduced from the original Bibi drawing from the gallery page.  Other fabrics include tussah silk, silk brocade and velvet.  The adinkra symbols used
represent elements of a strong marriage- love, protection, strength, friendship,                 and                           .
Bibi is equipped with a sleeve and is ready for immediate display.

Mela

Mela, like The Grand Ankh, is a literal festival of color.  Actually, the word mela
means "festival"in Hindi, and this quilt characterizes the nature of an Indian festival
with its color andmyriad textures.  This quilt is machine pieced with authentic block
printed cotton fabrics from India,in addition to African mudcloth accents.  It consists
of six squares, three of which are actualpieces of the prized and intricately
embroidered cloth from the  Banjara  region of India, complete with
shisha (mirror)
accents.  The remaining three squares are embroidered by the artist
utilizingtraditional Indian motifs and embroidery techniques and decorated with
sequins and spangles-embellishments commonly used on Indian fabrics designated
for festive occasions.

At the Gate of Grace quilt
This image at the center of this quilt is reproduced from the original
drawing of the same title on the gallery page.  She is inspired by the
Samaritan woman in the Bible who Jesus told about His "Living Water".
I imagined this woman living in a society similar to the traditional
societies within modern-day Indian and African culture.  This piece is
constructed from authentic hand-printed cotton fabrics from India and
contains some lovely artifact Banjara embroidery,
shisha cloth, cowrie shells and traditional embroidery done by the artist.

Love

Love was part of a series of 7 small wall quilts which were inspired by
loteria cards, the children's game similar to bingo which is popular in
Mexican culture.  Instead of the usual symmetrical, graphic representation of a heart, the loteria cards represent the heart as the way that it
actually is.  The image of the heart was drawn onto fabric and painted (machine embroidered, rather) in thread.
The fabrics usedare hand-dyed cottons, Japanese-inspired prints (in the reverse applique swirls on the sides) and lush red velvet.
The familiar heart-shaped embellishment at the bottom is a nickel silver cloak pin from Afghanistan with a green glass jewel in the center.

Detail of Destiny
Destiny was part of a series of 7 small wall quilts which were inspired by loteria cards, the children's game similar to bingo which is popular in Mexican culture. The
word "destiny" was my own challenge and not a part of the loteria set.    The idea of the  ladder being supported by the sky was inspired by Rene Magritte, the
Belgian Surrealist.   The image was then drawn onto fabric and painted (machine embroidered, rather) in thread.
The fabrics used are hand-dyed cottons, Japanese-inspired prints (in the reverse applique surrounding the threadpainting) and  Indonesian batiks.
