| DID YOU KNOW... Adinkra symbols have their origins in Ghana, West Africa and there are literally hundreds of them with variations. They are designs that represent cultural values relative to spirituality, family, relationships, government, how an individual should behave in society. My favorite one looks like this and is called the G'Nyame (pronounced gee-nyah-may). It means "in the beginning there was no One but God" or "fear none but God". You'll see it frequently used in my work. Mehendi is a popular form of henna body art and is most often associated with festivals, celebrations and rituals in India and other regions of Southeast Asia and North Africa. The symbols used are often stylized representations of forms found in nature. I love the rhythmic, flowing lines of mehendi designs and often juxtapose favorite African adinkra symbols with my mehendi renderings. |

| Love Love was part of a series of 7 small wall quilts which were inspired by loteria cards, the children's game similar to bingo which is popular in Mexican culture. Instead of the usual symmetrical, graphic representation of a heart, the loteria cards represent the heart as the way that it actually is. The image of the heart was drawn onto fabric and painted (machine embroidered, rather) in thread. The fabrics usedare hand-dyed cottons, Japanese-inspired prints (in the reverse applique swirls on the sides) and lush red velvet. The familiar heart-shaped embellishment at the bottom is a nickel silver cloak pin from Afghanistan with a green glass jewel in the center. | Destiny was part of a series of 7 small wall quilts which were inspired by loteria cards, the children's game similar to bingo which is popular in Mexican culture. The word "destiny" was my own challenge and not a part of the loteria set. The idea of the ladder being supported by the sky was inspired by Rene Magritte, the Belgian Surrealist. The image was then drawn onto fabric and painted (machine embroidered, rather) in thread. The fabrics used are hand-dyed cottons, Japanese-inspired prints (in the reverse applique surrounding the threadpainting) and Indonesian batiks.
